We all knew the writing was on the wall that WTR Andretti would soon leave the factory Acura program in favor of the Cadillac entries next year in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship. It was due time for this to happen. What's next for the team however is not yet to be known. The factory drivers who are the sons of Wayne Taylor will most likely go to Meyer Shank Racing next year. Yes...Meyer Shank returns once again. We all knew they'd be back eventually. That absence was not going to last long.
So with Andretti leaving Acura, there was no formal announcement to Cadillac, but all signals point to that happening in the not too distant future. We don't know how many cars Andretti will have next year. What's becoming clear is that they'll take the Ganassi entries in the IMSA paddock. Will they take Pipo Derani from Action Express? As you may recall, the 31 year old Brazilian is not returning to the team next year. Will they use his services and stay in the Cadillac family?
What's also in store for the team coming next year with their endurance driver line-up? Louis might stay but what about the others? All of these questions will be answered in due time. Now time for this guy's opinion:
I am not shocked that Andretti is leaving the Honda / Acura factory program, and as a Meyer Shank fan, this is a great thing! I love seeing MSR back in the top prototype class. They didn't lay off anyone. They kept all their employees and just shifted them to IndyCar. They now have David Malukas on the IndyCar program. They still have Tom Blomqvist and I am sure he will do very well in next year's championship. Welcome back MSR.
As for WTR, I love seeing more Cadillacs, so I hope this now means three full time entries along with Action Express!
